OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE ASSESSMENT TOOLS
Federal and State funding cuts of schools are preventing schools from purchasing needed software programs for integrating technology into the classroom. Open Source Software (OSS) is free software, that may be downloaded from the Internet. OSS assessment tools are an excellent source for integrating and implementing technology into lesson plans and classroom activities that will meet the NETS-T and NETS-S Standards. Teachers may use such tools as PollEverywhere, SurveyMonkey,
and Socrative to enhance students' learning experiences and engage them in the learning process in and out of the classroom.

Conduct real-time, in-the-moment formative assessment with Poll Everywhere. Teachers may pose a question for students, and students may respond via any internet device, i.e., Smartphone, Tablet, Laptop, or Desktop. Teachers may have students chart response to poll questions and formulate their on analysis of data collected, or Teachers may chart responses for discussion in the classroom. Results of poll can be generated into line charts, bar charts, or pie charts, and embedded into other web tools, (i.e., WikiSpaces, Prezi,Twitter, Websites) and PowerPoint presentations. Poll Everywhere may be used instead of expensive, high maintenance Clickers. Students use their cell phones for personal reasons, so why not incorporating these technologies into their learning experience.

Below is an example of how a school in Palm Beach, Florida is using Poll Everywhere to enhance learning in the classroom.

SurveyMonkey - "Create and publish online surveys in minutes, and view results graphically and in real time. SurveyMonkeyprovides free online questionnaire and survey." Sample survey I conducted to see how many IT Masters students were interested in learning about the Flipped Classroom.

Teachers may use SurveyMonkey for end-of-the-year evaluations from students and parents to assess needs for changes in their instructional design.

SOCRATIVE
SocrativeClass.pngSocrativeis an effective way to assess student learning in and out of the classroom and class time. A teacher may pose a question and continuously get responses until a designated time, this means students may respond to questions anywhere at anytime. The teacher's panel will calculate the results of responses, identify which students have responses, and chart the responses in any format. Students may respond on any internet device, i.e., Smartphone, Tablet, Laptop, or Desktop. The results are automatically sent to teacher's email.

STANDARDS
Application of PollEverywhere, SurveyMonkey, and Socrative meet:

ISTE NETS-T 2.c. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments. Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS-S. Teachers provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching.
